The New City Gas Company complex represents one of the world's largest examples of its type, for its era. The complex served to transform coal into gas for lighting Montreal's streets and buildings. The resulting gas light, many times brighter than other technologies of the time, allowed factories to operate through the night, and catalyzed the industrial revolution.
